A single semiconductor chip, typically silicon, or a single insulating substrate, such as glass, ceramic or sapphire used to realize a complete electronic circuit is termed as integrated circuits or simply ICs. Different ICs have been produced to cope with multiple electronics circuits advancing day by day. Among them, we have enlisted some integrated circuits in this category.
This list includes all those ICs made accessible by the manufacturers for use in equipment, generally classified as consumer electronics. And, therefore without a doubt, the ICs used in digital wristwatches, smoke detectors, TV sets and calculators fit into this category. We might surprise you with a fact that the ICs used in appliance timers and those used in industrial timers may be the same, and the microprocessor used to control a microwave oven or operate an electronic game could also be listed as system IC. Large number of ICs are almost similar but the classification varies with the reality, as in any, such as a wristwatch IC, a calculator or electronic game IC, different models are available for the reason that some are sold only to the manufacturer of the consumer device, where as some are supplied from electronic distributors.
ICs can be used commonly without designed specifications, or they may be custom designed for use in particular function, a particular calculator, watch or game. This unique feature plays vital role in increasing use of ICs in electronics field. ICs used in automated cameras, for example, seem to be almost entirely in that category. We can notice, only few selected system ICs are tagged with publish data by the manufactures. The vast majority of ICs used in mass market consumer equipment apparently are custom made. In case of increasing demand for replacement, only the original equipment manufacturers have them in stock.
The impact of IC is felt virtually in all branches of science and engineering. And, so system ICs are almost always large-scale (LSI) types and often contain both types of circuits: analog and digital. In this section, we have enlisted ICs according to the type of consumer equipment in which they are used. Each IC listed is a representative example of either standard or custom-designed units which perform a particular function. Variation in features may be available or some other minor differences may exist, in each case that function is sometimes combined with others.
